America

There's hope for us yet...

There's truth to the axiom that politics makes for strange bedfellows...

It will drive liberals crazy, but Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" Rally probably outdrew Rev. Martin Luther King Jr's original "I Have a Dream" rally, on which it was patterned. Mr. Beck's rally also lived up to its promise to be non-political. Weaving through the crowd on Saturday, the most partisan sign I saw read "I Can See November From My House."

On Glenn Beck's Rally

UPDATED:  I'm glad this got out here. Apparently Glenn also saw this article (on the Chicago Boyz website), written by someone known as Lexington Green.

A most brilliant post about Glenn Beck's rally last weekend in Washington, given all the hyperbole and pablum from the talking heads on TV.  And an interesting perspective.

The Glenn Beck rally is confusing people.

Why?

He is aiming far beyond what most people consider to be the goalposts.

Using Boyd’s continuum for war: Material, Intellectual, Moral.

Analogously for political change: Elections, Institutions, Culture.

Beck sees correctly that the Conservative movement had only limited success because it was good at level 1, for a while, weak on level 2, and barely touched level 3. Talk Radio and the Tea Party are level 3 phenomena, popular outbreaks, which are blowing back into politics.

Someone who asks what the rally has to do with the 2010 election is missing the point.

Beck is building solidarity and cultural confidence in America, its Constitution, its military heritage, its freedom. This is a vision that is despised by the people who have long held the commanding heights of the culture. But is obviously alive and kicking.

Beck is creating positive themes of unity and patriotism and freedom and independence which are above mere political or policy choices, but not irrelevant to them. Political and policy choices rest on a foundation of philosophy, culture, self-image, ideals, religion. Change the foundation, and the rest will flow from that. Defeat the enemy on that plane, and any merely tactical defeat will always be reversible.

America Is at Risk of Boiling Over

And out-of-touch leaders don't see the need to cool things off.

It is, obviously, self-referential to quote yourself, but I do it to make a point. I wrote the following on New Year's day, 1994. America 16 years ago was a relatively content nation, though full of political sparks: 10 months later the Republicans would take the House for the first time in 40 years. But beneath all the action was, I thought, a coming unease. Something inside was telling us we were living through "not the placid dawn of a peaceful age but the illusory calm before stern storms."

The temperature in the world was very high. "At home certain trends—crime, cultural tension, some cultural Balkanization—will, we fear, continue; some will worsen. In my darker moments I have a bad hunch. The fraying of the bonds that keep us together, the strangeness and anomie of our popular culture, the increase in walled communities . . . the rising radicalism of the politically correct . . . the increased demand of all levels of government for the money of the people, the spotty success with which we are communicating to the young America's reason for being and founding beliefs, the growth of cities where English is becoming the second language . . . these things may well come together at some point in our lifetimes and produce something painful indeed. I can imagine, for instance, in the year 2020 or so, a movement in some states to break away from the union. Which would bring about, of course, a drama of Lincolnian darkness. . . . You will know that things have reached a bad pass when Newsweek and Time, if they still exist 15 years from now, do cover stories on a surprising, and disturbing trend: aging baby boomers leaving America, taking what savings they have to live the rest of their lives in places like Africa and Ireland."

Murphy's Law, the Peter Principle and Barack Obama

What happens when everything that can go wrong in a person's character formation does go wrong, and that person continues to be promoted to his level of incompetence?

President Barack Obama happens.

What if McCain knows what he's doing?

I know in the previous post (written about 25-30 minutes ago, in a moment of sheer horror, desperation and exasperation) sounded like I had given up. And for the most part, I believe I have. But then I ran across the following story on a pro-McCain website called The American Thinker.
